She was my First and Only Love
To the Memory of my Departed Wife, Rebecca Adam
When I first met her I found her to be the unadorned, pure minded child of nature; and from my experience of her as my partner in life for 62 years, when I now look back upon it, I often think of what my fate might have been had we not been linked together; for if ever there was a woman that through life, from pure affection and inward sense of duty, honestly and faithfully discharged the duties of a wife and mother, and a neighbour, that woman was REBECCA ADAM. I now wish that nature had better fitted me to be her loving partner, but although the constitution of our minds varied, I venture to conclude that in the days we spent together, and from the fruits of our union, few have been happier and more successful in climbing the hill of life together and leaving the world better than they found it than THOMAS and REBECCA ADAM. If we meet in another world, my hope is that a like position will be assigned to us.
