His service was crucial for connecting the growing communities in the area, and he used a vessel named the Magnet to transport mail, passengers, and cargo. Ballina Municipal Council named Sheather Street in his honour.

Richard Sheather died on 28 Jan 1902 at Riley's Hill in Coraki, New South Wales, at the age of 57 as reported in the Clarence River Advocate on 4 February 1902:
Mr Richard Sheather died at Riley's Hill on Tuesday last, after an illness of some months.
The deceased was a well-known resident of the Lower Clarence many years ago.
Over 20 years since he built the premises in Maclean now occupied by the Advocate, where he carried on various lines of business. He also owned a small steamer.
He afterwards removed to the Richmond, where he owned and ran the river steamer Magnet for some years.
His remains were interred at Woodburn, work being suspended on the day of the funeral at Riley's Hill Quarry, where universal sympathy is expressed for the bereaved family.
He was buried at the Church of England Cemetery in Woodburn, New South Wales.
