MAN'S TRAGIC END
Mr. Charles Sheather, of Wardell street, Bellambi, met his death on Tuesday, under most unusual circumstances.
He was cutting timber with a maul and steel wedge when a thin splinter of metal flew from the wedge and pierced his heart.
Mr Sheather and a companion, Mr. Charles David Jenkins, also of Bellambi, left home that morning in the former's lorry. They were cutting some firewood just off the Appin road when the accident occurred.
Jenkins assisted Sheather, who was bleeding freely, to the lorry, and drove to Bulli Pass, where the ranger phoned the ambulance.
However the injured man was dead before he reached the doctor's surgery.
The late Mr. Sheather was 56 years of age and had been employed as gravedigger at both Wollongong and Bulli cemeteries. He leaves a widow and grown up family.
The funeral took place on Wednesday, the remains being interred in Bulli General Cemetery.
He was buried on 6 Jun 1940 in Bulli, New South Wales.
