A great gloom passed over the Manning River District when the sad news became known that Mr. Clarence Henry Bushnell, Chief Engineer of the Jones Island butter factory passed away in the Taree District Cottage Hospital. A few days previously an operation was performed for appendicitis, but later on peritonitis set in, and proved fatal.
Deceased, who was 47 years, was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Bushnell, of Harwood Island, and was an engineer of the highest note. He was a most popular man and during his many visits to the various towns of N.S. Wales where he was instrumental in installing machinery in most of the principal factories, he made numerous friends, who to-day mourn his sad loss. He was most conscientious, and obliging and was ever ready to do all in his power to promote the great harmony and goodwill between man and master. Being of a sober, energetic and a self-sacrificing nature, he won many friends.
He was a keen lover of sport, especially cricket and tennis. During his residence in Newcastle, he became a member of the Miller's Forest Cricket Club, where he won a lot of friends, and where his sporting qualities were admired by all. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a foundation member of the Lake Cudgellico (sic) branch and was mainly instrumental in founding this lodge.
He leaves a sorrowing wife, two sons and two daughters, all of whom reside at Campsie.
The funeral was one of the largest ever seen in Taree, the interment being made in the Church of England cemetery, Scott's Creek, Coopernook. The Rev. Canon Ritchie read the burial service and referred in feeling terms to the sad loss sustained in the death of such a worthy citizen. He conveyed, on behalf of the People of Taree the deepest sympathy to Mrs. Bushnell and family.
The Masonic service was read by the Worshipful Master of the Taree lodge. The chief mourners were: Mrs. Bushnell (Windoro), Victor and Albert (sons), Heather and Hazel (daughters), Mr. and Mrs. Bushnell (father and mother), Mesdames Fraser (Grafton), Wiseman (Clovelley), Parkes (Dulwich Hill), and Coote (Miller's Forest), sisters, H. J. Coote (brother-in-law), and Edgar Monkley. There was a car-load of beautiful wreaths, and included in the number was one from the manager, and another from the directors and employees of the Jones Island Butter Factory."
He was buried at the Church of England Cemetery, Scott's Creek (Grave location recorded as: Row 74) in Coopernook, New South Wales.
