      John Robert Anderson was born on 24 July 1879 at Hirdigarth Walls in Shetland Islands although the family home was in Glasgow. John remained in the Shetland Islands, being reared by his father's family, and it is believed that his mother and siblings moved back to Glasgow.
John was a fisherman in the fishing fleet. From this career he joined a square rigger as a crew member and sailed to Australia. He then joined the Fire Brigade in George Street, Sydney, serving the Circular Quay area in Shetland Islands about 1896.

John Robert Anderson married Martha Florence Fairhall, daughter of Henry James Fairhall and Harriet Elizabeth Ann Standen, on 30 September 1903 at Reorganised Church of Latter-Day Saints, 471 Pitt Street in Sydney, New South Wales.
