David Syme immigrated in 1852 to Sydney, New South Wales, after an unsuccessful attempt to find gold in America. From Sydney he caught a steamer to Melbourne and walked to the Castlemaine goldfields thence to Bendigo, Wangaratta, Ballarat and Beechworth, where he had a little success.
On 27 Sep 1856 David and Ebenezer became the joint owners of Melbourne's The Age newspaper.

In 1860 David became the sole proprietor of The Age following his brother's death. He campaigned for trade protection to build Victoria's industries, and this gained him powerful friends and enemies.
