He undertook military service on 25 Aug 1936 at Melbourne, Victoria, in the Royal Australian Navy, serving on board HMAS Shropshire, HMAS Yarra and HMAS Perth in the Battle of the Coral Sea in Europe. He reached the rank of Chief Petty Officer - Telegraphist/Communications, being awarded MID twice for bravery. He was based at HMAS Lonsdale at the time of his discharge from active service on 4 Aug 1947.

Edmund James Harkness married Marjery Syme, daughter of Norman Leslie Syme and Lillian Adelaide Fairhall, on 11 Nov 1940 in Melbourne, Victoria.
