William Bowden was baptised on 12 Aug 1796 in Benenden, Kent.

William Bowden married Elizabeth Godfrey, daughter of Francis Godfrey and Elizabeth Thrift, on 15 May 1817 in Benenden, Kent.
He and Elizabeth Bowden emigrated on 24 Jun 1838 from Gravesend, Kent, on board the "Maitland", arriving in Sydney on 6 Nov 1838 under the "assisted immigration" program. William and Elizabeth were accompanied on board the "Maitland" by James, William's brother, and James and Sarah Godfrey, Elizabeth's brother and sister.
William was initially secured employment as a messenger for the Supreme Court in Sydney, before setting up a carrying business and living in Bourke Street, Surry Hills.
He lived at Dora Creek, near Lake Macquarie NSW, where William had secured a land grant for timber clearing in 1842. A slab hut was constructed, and the property named "Muddy Creek". The family's days were spent cultivating vegetables and other food crops. The timber had to be manually moved for sale but later a pair of bullocks eased the work.
William lived at "Kennington" in Raymond Terrace, New South Wales, in 1856 following disastrous floods which totally destroyed the farm and their possessions.
William Bowden was able to develop this farm so that the slab house (34 feet x 14 feet) was a a hill above the river with a jetty for access. There were outhouses, including corn houses, a dairy, piggeries, carpenters' and smiths' workshops, a stockyard and four enclosed paddocks. The farm is still believed to be in existence along the Raymond Terrace Road north of Hexham and opposite Courtauld's factory.

William Bowden died on 6 Jul 1882 at "Kennington" in Raymond Terrace, New South Wales, at the age of 85.
