He was described as being able to read and write, a Protestant, height 4ft 8in (142cm), with a fair, ruddy complexion, brown hair and grey eyes in 1833.

James William Clements immigrated on 25 Aug 1833 to Sydney, New South Wales, as a Convict from England on board the "Captain Cook". James had been convicted on 16 December 1832 for stealing a handkerchief valued at 3 shillings, and received a Life sentence in The Old Bailey on 3 January 1833. On arrival, he was assigned to Caleb and Felix Wilson on their property "Tocal" at Paterson, and no doubt assisted with the building of Tocal homestead in 1839.

James William Clements married Ann Pugh, daughter of Samuel Pugh and Nancy Cornick, on 7 Feb 1846 at Church of England Church in Paterson, New South Wales.
