He emigrated in 1857 from Poslingford, Suffolk, on board the 'Golconda', arriving in Sydney on 25 May of that year. John paid One Pound to transport himself, his wife and daughter as assisted immigrants. He reportedly had a sister, Charlotte, living at Wilberforce at the time of his arrival.
