William Cant was baptised on 4 Apr 1824 in Great Gonerby, Lincolnshire.

William Cant married Elizabeth Kennewell, daughter of Richard G. Kennewell and Jane Johnson, on 8 Aug 1843 in Grantham, Lincolnshire.

William Cant and Elizabeth Cant immigrated on 26 Jun 1844 to Sydney, New South Wales, on board the "Briton", as assisted immigrants, having sailed from Liverpool on 15 March.
The arrival was described as follows: "THE BRITON - This vessel arrived on Wednesday from Liverpool, with 269 bounty emigrants, after a fine run of 102 days, during which time only seven deaths occurred, six children and one adult. Shortly after leaving Liverpool the measles broke out among the infants, but no deaths occurred in consequence, the last case having been cured on the 16th April. The cargo on board is small. The emigrants appear to have been well selected, and consist of 41 single women, 26 single men, 86 married persons, and 116 children, all of whom are in good health. The ship presents an appearance of cleanliness throughout highly creditable to the surgeon, captain, and officers, more especially as nothing but wet weather has occurred since leaving the Cape of Good Hope. It may be worthy of remark, that there are only nine mechanics on board; four blacksmiths, four carpenters, and one mason; the others consist of agricultural labourers. She spoke nothing connected with these colonies; but on the 23rd June, saw a schooner anchored under the lee of Kent’s Group, during a gale wind from the westward. The emigrants were mustered yesterday, after which she was removed to off the Flour Company’s Wharf, where parties wanting servants can engage them."
William and Elizabeth were contracted to work for William Russell of Penrith on their arrival, William as a farm hand and Elizabeth as a laundress, for a joint wage of 22 Pounds per year. They left for the Hunter after a year.

William Cant married Jane Kennewell, daughter of Richard G. Kennewell and Jane Johnson, on 8 Aug 1853 at the Wesleyan Chapel in East Maitland, New South Wales, (possibly 11 Aug 1853?)

William Cant died on 18 Aug 1906 at the District Hospital, 76 Brunswick Street in Maitland, New South Wales, at the age of 82 and the cause of his death was recorded as nephritis.
He was buried on 19 Aug 1906 at Campbells Hill Cemetery (Grave location recorded as: Church of England Section A8, Plot 28) in West Maitland, New South Wales.
