John Clyde Payne (35) and George Burke (47), brothers-in-law, both married men, were killed at the Bexhill railway quarry on Tuesday afternoon.
Payne was employed as a powder man and Burke as his assistant. Payne's head was blown off by the explosion, and the decapitated body fell to the bottom of the quarry, some 25 feet.
Burke ran away, and had covered some distance when he fell. He never regained consciousness, although there was not a mark on his body. His death is attributed to shock.
The two deceased were employed about 3.30 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon in an operation known in quarrying as "bulling'' holes. This consists of placing small charges in drilled holes for the purpose of enlarging the bottom to receive the full blasting charge at a later stage. Three holes of about 25 feet depth in solid rock were to be treated, and charges had been placed in two of them. The cause of the premature explosion at the third bole is not known. Payne was an experienced
quarryman. He must have had his head over the orifice when the unexpected explosion occurred and received the full force of it, the long hole in the solid rock acting as a funnel. Gelignite, safety fuses and detonators are used in the quarrying, and other employees are at a loss to account for the explosion.
The men were working on a ledge near the top of the quarry when the accident occurred, and Payne's body fell to the bottom. Burke was seen to make his way to the top, and run some distance before collapsing. The two charges in the holes first treated did not explode until after his fall. Medical assistance was procured, and life pronounced extinct.
The deceased wore brothers-in-law residing at Bexhill, and Payne leaves a widow and two children, and Burke a widow and five children. The widows are sisters.
The remains were interred in the Church of England cemetery at Lismore at 11 am. on Thursday.
The late Mr. Payne was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Payne, of Oxley Island. He was a native of this district and lived here until he was about the age of 22.
