MURDER
A Mrs. Neilson, a lady residing about four miles from Clarence Town, was brutally murdered about ten days since, about half a mile from the township, on her return home. A man named Patrick Bryant was immediately arrested on suspicion, and has since been committed on the verdict of the Coroner's jury to stand his trial for the murder. The unfortunate deceased was daughter-in-law to the Rev. Dr. Neilson, of Belfast, Ireland, and has left three young children motherless. Patrick Bryan was subsequently hanged in Newcastle on 20 Oct. 1848.

      Richard Alfred Yardy was born in 1891 in Dungog, New South Wales. He was described as five feet 7.5 inches in height, weighed 144 pounds, with fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair, according to his Army enlistment records on 2 Aug 1915.

He began military service on 3 Aug 1915 in Newcastle, New South Wales, in the "A" Company, 30th Infantry Battalion of the Australian Infantry Forces - Regimental No: 321. He embarked from Sydney on 9 Nov 1915 on board the H.M.A.T. 'Beltana', following three months of training.

Richard Alfred Yardy died on 20 Jul 1916 in the Western Front.
He was buried on 29 Sep 1916 at Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery (Grave location recorded as: Grave 58, Row K and Plot 1) in Fleurbaix, Pas-de-Calais, in Grave 72, Row C and Plot 2. Following reconstruction of the cemetery by the Imperial War Graves Commission, the location of Richard's grave was identified in a letter to his parents dated 1 Sep 1925.
