Mary Isabella Hollingsworth died on 3 Jun 1883 in Seaham, New South Wales, and her death was reported in the "Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser" of 16 June 1883 as follows: "District News (from our correspondents) - SEAHAM.
It is my painful duty to record a shocking and fatal accident, which happened here on last Thursday, to a fine little girl of two years, daughter of our respected neighbour, Mr. James Hollingsworth. The facts connected with the sad affair are these: A vessel, containing some boiling water, had been accidentally left standing uncovered for a few moments on the floor, when the little creature, by some means, got near and fell into it. When rescued, the child was found to be dreadfully scalded about the lower portions of the body. All that parental love and tenderness could suggest to alleviate its sufferings, and save the precious life, was done, but of no avail, as, after suffering intense agony, it died on the following morning. The deepest sympathy is evinced here for the parents, in their great bereavement, which is rendered still more painful by the sudden and agonising nature of the death. The funeral took place on Saturday, and was followed to the Hinton burial ground by a large number of friends and relatives. At the inquest, which was held on the morning of the funeral, it was unfortunately considered necessary, in investigating the matter, to question the heartbroken mother at great length. I may here mention that during divine service, conducted on last Sunday by the Rev. Dr. Boag, reference was made to this melancholy accident and the deep affliction of the parents, in most touching and comforting words comforting to all present, especially those who have also tasted the bitter cup of bereavement.
Seaham, 12th June, 1883."
